SAFE WITHOUT DRUG INITIATIVE (SWiD)

Introduction

This project was introduced by PRIMORG in 2024 to address the increasing concern of illicit drug consumption, particularly among Nigerian adolescents.

The UNODC's 2018 report

The UNODC’s 2018 report highlighted the prevalence of drug use and drug-related disorders in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for interventions. Adolescents are especially vulnerable due to the developmental changes their brains undergo, as noted by the National Institute of Medicine. The increasing disregard for the dangers of cannabis poses an even greater risk to this age group.

SWiD Aim

SWiD aims to combat these issues by focusing on reducing drug consumption and abuse among secondary school students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The initiative’s strategy includes capacity-building and sensitization programs for students, parents, and teachers, supported by media engagement and collaboration with key stakeholders such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the FCT Secondary Education Board, and public and private schools in the FCT. This multi-faceted approach is essential for creating a long-lasting impact and preventing the next generation from falling into the cycle of drug abuse.
